Georgia Power has partnered with educators statewide to increase understanding of the importance of using energy wisely and efficiently through their statewide initiative, “Learning Power”. The third, fifth, and eighth grades were chosen because of the ability to tie energy and energy efficiency directly into the Georgia Performance Standards. The program presented students with engaging opportunities to make a personal connection with how science is actually applied to real life situations, so it becomes more than just memorizing facts.
The third grade program used engaging activities to cover the Georgia Performance Standard on “Heat”. Mr. Daniel engaged the students with hands on activities. The students learned about insulators and how they make our homes more energy efficient. They read thermometers and observed how an insulated cup holds the heat longer.
At the end of the lesson, the students were able to measure transfer of heat between objects, test different materials to determine which are the best insulators, use a thermometer to measure heat energy, and have knowledge of how insulators make our homes and businesses more energy efficient.
