On Tuesday, February 19th, teachers were invited to the State Capital for a Day on the Hill. Two teachers from Sally Meadows, Kim Garvin and Amy Sowell, were fortunate to be a part of this opportunity. Lawmakers met directly with teachers and PAGE representatives about this session’s imminent legislation. PAGE Day on the Hill allows teachers to have their voices heard about the potential student impact on impending legislation. As lifelong learners, teachers must be willing to step outside of the classroom. There were very few teacher representatives from our area. The teachers from Sally Meadows met with Senator Williams about some concerns lawmakers have with the new Common Core Standards. Additionally, the teachers were able to hear directly from State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge. The day was extremely informative for the teachers (and hopefully the lawmakers). The input of citizens, in this case teachers, and the decisions made by the lawmakers will have an impact on our students and contribute to the outcome of their future.
