Mrs. Urquhart Named SDM's Teacher of the Year!
Congratulations to Mrs. Sheila Urquhart upon being selected as the SDM Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Urquhart graduated from Brewton Parker College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught 4th grade language arts for five years before moving to 3rd grade to teach science/social studies.
Mrs. Urquhart's philosophy of teaching is a testament to the reason she was selected by the SDM staff as teacher of the year. "I believe first and foremost that a teacher should know, love and respect the students that enter his or her classroom. A wise and caring teacher meets each of his or her students on their level, taking into consideration their varied backgrounds. This can be difficult, especially when you teach all or most of the diverse populations of the school. It is my belief that no matter what background the child may come from, they have the ability to learn. Everyone learns at their own pace and in their own unique manner, so it is important for a teacher to provide appropriate instructional strategies which will create a positive, caring environment that allows every student to feel confident to take the risk to learn. In my opinion, an average teacher can learn to teach the curriculum, but the outstanding teacher has genuine concern for his or her students. Teaching the curriculum is the ultimate goal, but that really cannot be done successfully without building rapport with the students. The best reward in teaching is when a parent tells me their child shares with them what they learned in my class with excitement, and that they love coming in my classroom every day because they can’t wait to see what they are going to learn. I know then that I have made a significant difference in the education and lives of my students."
Meadows Elementary is very proud to call Mrs. Urquhart our Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013. She is an exceptional educator, professional co-worker, and a role model for all.
