Congratulations to Mrs. Joy Sharpton! - SDM's Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Joy Sharpton was selected by her peers as our Sally Meadows Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2015-16.
Mrs. Sharpton graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and Troy University with a Master of Education degree. She has taught 5th grade math for the past nine years as well as some years of science and social studies.
According to Mrs. Sharpton, her philosophy of teaching is as follows:
"To me being an educator is rewarding because each day presents a new challenge, each day can be hectic and time consuming, each day can make you laugh or make you want to cry, and each day opens your eyes to the world (good and bad). My students are my extended family, and I feel responsible for their successes and failures. I believe every child can learn in his/her own way and at their own time. I try and cultivate a classroom environment that encourages students to explore and learn without fear of failure. I encourage students to learn from me as well as each other. I believe in allowing students freedom to explore various strategies and opportunities to work with others."
Congratulations to Mrs. Sharpton! After reading her teaching philosophy, it's evident why she was selected as our Teacher of the Year. She is a shining example of the very best SDM has to offer and will represent us well!
